Local resources for trans Floridians looking to leave the state or find a new HRT provider

Most trans folks here have now learned about SB 254, which has effectively ground gender affirming care to a halt for both youth and adults. You can see my last post here.

1) If you need to request resources, including financial aid, try Southern Equality. Right now, they have mini grants of $500 for people looking to leave the state.

https://southernequality.org/flresources/

2) If you are going to be staying in Florida, but need help finding a new in-state provider that can provide HRT, try the Umbrella Guide. Do note that HRT state-wide seems to be paused while we waiting for the state to create the new informed consent form. I am now hearing this could be as late as July.

Feel free to tack on other local resources.

As always, the best way to help trans Floridians is to give them money -- please consider donating to the many GoFundMes out there.

My friend let me introduce you to Some Bullshit:

Huh. I get random palpitations and they couldn’t work out what was up, too. So that might be why? Interesting!

Welcome to Weird Heart Club, where your choices are Put Up With It/Mitigate Triggers, Take Beta Blockers (Not Good If Your Blood Pressure Is Already Low), or Get In A Big Tube And Let Them Shoot A Laser Into Your Heart To Burn The Nerve Dead.

Honestly, at this point in my life I'd take the chances with the tube and laser. But my life and health is significantly more fucked than yours. And compared to some shit I've been through and am going through still, tube laser sounds less invasive and like really a simple solution. But again, uh. Your general health is a far cry better than my general health. But we do have heart problems in common. Anyway, tube laser sounds neat! Hope my heart solutions are even half as fun and SciFi!

#honest question are random heart palpitations supposed to be concerning#bc like. hm.

Occasional mild heart palpitations are not necessarily concerning. They are a common reaction to stress, illness, intense emotion, exertion, or various small physiological imbalances like caffeine overconsumption.

Heart palpitations that occur often or for an extended period of time should be checked out by a cardiologist. They might be indicative of a problem that could cause issues in the future, or that can be treated or mitigated. Medications are usually available to help with these things and improve your function, safety, and quality of life, should you choose to take them (I don't bother with them personally but many people do).

Heart palpitations accompanied by pain or by regular bouts of dizziness, shortness of breath, intense nausea or other signs of circulatory distress absolutely should be checked out. They MIGHT be fine (I experience all of these things and apart from pain they're just considered an inconvenience), but they might also indicate serious trouble such as impending heart failure. The heart is a lot more resilient than people give it credit for, but it's also an organ that puts you on a really strict time limit (as in, minutes) if it can't get itself back in order, and you want to know ASAP what your risks are there. (Heart pain, in particular, may be a symptom of a heart attack in progress -- you want the emergency room for that one.)

Perpetually pissed off that when people say "religious imagery" in regards to art and media they're just saying "Christian imagery".

Because stained glass, kneeling with your hands clasped, crosses, an old man in a beard in the sky...... that's all *Christian imagery*.

And it leads to like....an environment where non-Christian art with no Christian undertones gets mislabeled as Christian because they associate a nursing mother or a spire or a choir singing in operatic tones as Christian. It also leads to religious art that isn't Christian not being recognized as religious and its meaningful symbols and motifs unappreciated.

When I and other Jews make art involving fire, water, and trees- that's religious imagery. But this cultural Christian sphere doesn't recognize as such because they think religious = Christian.

May I ask why the British government has any say in what epitaph one is allowed to choose for their late relatives?

ironpines

okay i have to say something now that i read an article more in depth & holy shit is this fucking disgusting. taken from this bbc article ;

“Given the passions and feelings connected with the use of Irish Gaelic, there is a sad risk that the phrase would be regarded as some form of slogan or that its inclusion without translation would, of itself, be seen as a political statement,” said Judge Stephen Eyre, QC, chancellor of the Diocese of Coventry.

he basically said that the entirity of the irish language is a political statement, that speaking it is a political act & putting these totally heartfelt worlds on the gravestone of an irish catholic woman who completely assimilated to english culture but wanted some memoriam of her culture in her children’s wishes, is a political act.

Untranslated Irish words would be “unintelligible to all but a small minority of readers”, he ruled in his judgment for the Church of England consistory court on 6 May. He authorised a memorial which included a translation of the phrase in English.

why does every passer by need to understand the words on a gravestone of somebody they don’t know? why was this even taken into account?

& you wanna know why it would be unintelligible to all but a small minority of readers? bc its IRISH ; a language the english tried for CENTURIES to wipe out. they punished people for speaking our culture’s language, they killed people for it. the amount of irish people who know their own culture’s language is horrifically small & it’s entirely because of the racist onslaught the english perpetrated against us when they decided to try & wipe out our culture. also, why does it matter to anyone but the family what words are on THEIR MOTHER’S GRAVESTONE?

also, this battle has gone on for TWO YEARS. two years where this poor family has not been able to grieve properly for their beloved lost mother, where they can’t honour her with their culture & their language that they have probably fought to keep alive.

i’m so fucking disgusted.

notquitetwilight

Almost three fucking years after she died, her family is finally allowed to put her national language on her gravestone.

I’m watching The Big Bang Theory in its natural setting—playing in the background of a hot spiral room—and I can say within that specific context, it is a very charming show. Like the saltine crackers of media.

andhumanslovedstories

Hospital room. A hospital room. Not a hot spiral room. What a nightmare idea. And you all rolled with that idea. The idea that I was sitting in a hot sweltering spiral prison watching the Big Bang theory is actually what hell is. Bazinga.

By the way, the way that No Child Left Behind impacts the trade worker shortage in the US is because in about 2002 shop classes, home ec classes, auto classes, etc, had their funding diverted into teaching kids how to pass standardized tests so that the schools could continue to pay teachers and keep the library open.

It’s hard to figure out that you might be interested in plumbing as a career when you’ve spent twelve years learning how to pass multiple choice tests and having ceramics and band as the only available electives.

This is one place where I actually WILL do the generational thing and say that Millennials and Gen Z got completely fucked in a way that older generations didn’t.

It’s actually really fucking hard to repair a cabinet when you’ve never had a shop class. It’s really goddamned difficult to learn everything about car maintenance on your own through youtube videos instead of in a semester of auto shop. It’s really goddamned difficult to figure out you want to be a plumber or an electrician or a welder when you are eighteen years old, have been taught to pass tests and cajoled into applying for college, and you’ve never handled an air compressor or used a socket wrench.

Nothing brings me more joy than people learning from history and then modernizing it up a bit.

Like you wanna grow your hair long? Stop washing it so often and brush it more to keep it clean. Your hair will be way healthier too. And stop cutting it (and use a boar bristle brush, it’ll work better as it’ll actually absorb the oils, distribute them better, and work a hell of a lot better than non-absorbent plastic would) Edit: Early on, some well meaning person kindly asked me to inform you that the boar bristle brush technique does not work on curly hair, however I have since been informed by multiple parties that it does! My hair is as straight as a pin so use your own judgment!

You want to keep cool in the summer? Out with the polyester and in with the linen and cotton. Natural fibers are going to keep you cooler because they’re literally made to breathe

You want to preemptively stop the underwire in your bra from poking through? There’s a very simple embroidery stitch you can do that the Edwardians used to do to stop their corset boning from coming through.

We don’t have to just learn from our ancestors mistakes, we can learn from their stakes too

I got up to greet my parents’ dog and she immediately jumped up and slammed her nose hard into my eye socket aa a gesture of affection and now my vision in that eye is fuzzy

15 minutes later I looked at her fondly and said “hey sweet dog”, inspiring her to violently paw my arm and spill extremely hot coffee all over my chest
